Why Captain America is a better mentor than GA Batman...

I may be a DC girl at heart, but there is one thing I have to say...

In the Golden Age, Captain America was a better mentor than Batman.

If this were Batman, he'd have made Robin wear the corset. But Steve? If anyone is going to dress up like a woman, it's going to be him.

It's his patriotic duty!

Man, that's one ugly woman.

And of course, Bucky has to die on him

Moral: being an ass to your sidekicks is good for them

Does...does he have a high-heeled version of his buccaneer boots on there in panel 2?

    anon:

Bucky didn't die, he was brainwashed into being an assasain for the soviet union during the cold war.

and that can happen to anyone, so there is no reason to put blame on cap.

    anon -

Of course, Batman has had two Robins die on him now, so perhaps how you treat them really doesn't matter.

And pardon my ignorance, but I never realized that Bucky was ever so... small. I haven't seen much of the GA Cap, and I always thought that Bucky was a teenager, not a 10 year old. Now I'm kind of creeped out that someone would let Steve Rogers have a kid on a battlefield.

Bucky was 16 according to Brubaker's Captain America run.

Yes, surely the Nazis will NEVER suspect a 6' 2", 240 lb. woman with a teenager in a Little Lord Fauntleroy costume (complete with giant lolly) in tow. "Greatest Generation," my ass! It's a wonder we're not all driving German cars and watching Japanese television sets now.

anon: I don't really think that making Dick dress like Marie Antoinette that one time really made a difference.

Besides. Batman and Robin were in Gotham. Steve and Bucky were on the battlefront. So I think there's a difference in terms of risk factor there. :-)

catrina: Never doubt the captain's dress sense. :-)

elad: I may love you for that comment. Beware though, for I am fickle and quick to be distracted.

the dane: Pipes are cool. :-P

jer: Well, in modern day stuff, Bucky's about 16-17 in the flashbacks and has been since the 60s when Steve woke up.

But I think he was intended to be younger back in the real forties. He was the "mascot" of the group and all. Whereas 16-17 year olds would be common soldiers. Very likely he was intended to be younger (but I think he was there before Steve himself joined).

I admit, I think aging him was a Very Good Idea.

    david: Yep!

hale: Shh. Stop contaminating my comics with your filthy logic.

Now I'm gonna take my panasonic television home via my rented volkswagon if you don't mind...

I take full responsibility for introducing that Cap sequence to the web! I did a post on it a week or so ago on my blog...so if you need to know WHY Cap chose to wear a corset over his chain mail, copy-paste the perma-link below:

    Sally: I think so!

By the simple reason he is an iconic american character, and Batman is not more than a common character who has a weird personality.
