Change in the Air?

This intrigues me quite a bit, though I have to admit I've never been much of an Archie fan.

I wonder how well the design change will do. It's very pretty (and I like that it's not terribly manga-esque. I do like manga art in general, but it's certainly not the only style out there, and I'm glad to see this going in a different direction). I wonder about the fan response though.

I'm not an Archie fan myself, but it seems like they've been depicted in their original style for so long that the change is rather jarring. I wonder if it'll be any better recieved than changing Superman's costume.

Then again, I'm sure there are people who read Archie for the same reason I read DC: the stories and characters. So it'll probably do all right.

I admit. Now I'm really curious about what the guys look like...

I'm somewhat intrigued. I'm just wondering if there will ever be another Punisher/Archie with that style. It was glorious becaue Riverdale was drawn cartoonish. Now an Archie/O.C. will be likely.

I have to agree with a number of the posters on newsarama...the redesign looks a little trendy, and the girls look like they would benefit from a few more pounds.

I also hope they keep that hat jug always wore.

I hope they do Reggie ok. I love Reggie.

    It all depends on Jughead.

I find the whole thing pretty jarring, as a person who still picks up and reads Archie digests along with his family.

But I LOVE manga Sabrina, so maybe the change will be good.

Yeah, now you guys got me thinking about Jughead. How would they draw him? I also like the fact that Betty and Veronica are curvy. Now they're gonna look like Paris and Nicole? Ugh.

Eh; they've changed it before. Most likely it'll last a year or so before reverting.

I must admit that I'm a bit of an anti-fan of Archie...

That said, I think that Archie himself looks OK, but the girls not so much (tho' I like Veronica with short hair).

As others have said, it will all hinge on Jughead.

It worries me that that's the piece that they chose to debut with, as it looks a little rough and poorly-proportioned in the faces. Quite frankly, if I just saw the art, I'd guess it was from some sort of rushed-out for-hire Eros work.

When I was younger, I was obsessed with my mom's old Archie comics (and Ritchie Rich). Like you wrote, I find the change rather jarring and I don't think the girls look as cute as they did in the old style.

I'll miss the simplicity of the old style when I see the digests near the check-out at the grocery story, though, but since I don't read the books, the change won't bother me any more than that.

Sorry 'bout the double post. Unless it turns out to be a triple, then I'm sorry 'bout that.

I agree that the look is kind of jarring. It's like seeing "Blondie" or "Beetle Bailey" as done Neal Adams-style.

I predict that Jughead under the new style will look a lot like
Xander from early "Buffy", except with the trademark hat. I can envision Reggie looking like an evil Peter Petrelli, except without those damned bangs. Or maybe like a teen version of Adrian Pasdar?

To Anonymous- Strangely enough, the artist, Steven Butler, HAS drawn the Punisher before. It was a Spider-Man story back in the early 90's and the Punisher was a bit unhinged. Still, Butler did a good job on him, so maybe you still CAN get Punisher/Archie 2.
I agree it won't be the same....
