Griping

Whew, back! Internet trouble sucks!

Anyway, you know what annoys me most about the commotion over, well, shall we say Captain America #25? (In case someone somewhere managed to not hear about it...)

...I'd never gotten around to putting Brubaker's Cap on my pull list. I kept meaning to, I'd pick it up in the store, but I never remembered to add it.

And I didn't get to go to the shop yesterday.

I will NEVER get this issue.

Stupid jerks, it's not like it's going to be permanent, didn't we go through this with Superman?

Eh, your shop should be getting reprints in 2 weeks.

Probably without the Epting cover, though.

    It's still annoying though. :-P

I was planning to give Cap's series a try after the whole Civil War thing ended. Guess I'll have to wait quite a while longer now.

For what it's worth, it's a great issue, and anyone who complains about it is wrong. :-)

I'm not close enough to the fandom and 'in the know' enough to really be properly pissed about this. Is it wrong of me to be more amused by the Samuel J. cameo?

I guess my reaction is the same as always- my decision to bitch about this creative direction with hinge upon whether it's used well or done like the Pits of Stooopid.

I do have some (utterly irrational) affection for Captain America. I thought it was great when he had to re-buy all his Sinatra records (was that in Ultimates? I can't remember). I guess my innner 13-year-old comics fan is all like 'ya, couldn't they shoot Tony instead?' XD

We'll see how it goes... your griping may be justified. Civil War looks a huge tangled mess in general.

Yeah, but this is the Marvel U. Its like the real world and stuff. I'm talking about New York City! Relevancy! Holding a mirror up to ourselves, exception in the reflection sits a sad, sad Peter Parker! At DC, you got things like the ambush bug and Thanagarians, and really.....there's nothing serious at all about the Ambush Bug. Or Thanagarians.

You've read the rest of the series already, so you'll understand this - Cap's death is probably the best part of Civil War.

Admittedly Brubaker wasn't left many choices with what to do with the character after CW was done with him, he more or less says as much in interviews, but he looked at the story and decided what would be best for it.

I love Cap (yes, I'm English and I love Cap. It's Cap, it's very hard not to love him.) but he will, as we all known, be back. Until then it's going to be 5-14 something months of all Winter Soldier, all the time, and I can't not be excited about that.

There was an article about the issue in the Metro (a free paper they give out on public transport in the UK, I don't know if there's a similar version in other parts of the world or not). In it there was a side bar about other famous heroes that had been killed off.
Out of all of them, only the two that had happened in the last year hadn't already been brought back to life.

Somes the whole thing up quite nicely if you ask me.

Hey, it's not irrational affection, dammit! What I loved best about Cap was that in the hands of his best writers he represented a sort of... negotiation between patriotism and reality. Steve Rogers was a man who when confronted with corruption at the highest levels of American society took it in, went away and thought about it, and then reworked his role. And it's a dynamic conversation, too; there have been several go arounds of this, with different aspects of American flaws. And he's always come back to being a man who can love his country, know its flaws, and wear a flag without irony.

And I think part of the reason that people took it so well rather then going DIE BRUBAKER DIE is that a) they trust the Bru, who has been writing Captain America with unmatched love and skill for 25 issues now, and b) being tucked up safe and dead looks better than being used to justify the trainwreck that the "oh, yes, Tony Stark is the total hero of Civil War, despite being a thief, manipulator, and murderer! shame on you that think otherwise" ending of CW/Frontline is. If he's deceased, the PtB can't drag him out to say "oh, yes, I was wrong and Tony was right".

Apparently, Brubaker killed Cap cause he couldn't think of any other stories to write with him and he had done a prison one already. Way to go.

I wish Nextwave was still around so we could get a splash:

Don't worry, after the first hysteria is over, you'll be able to find this issue with no difficulty.

Remember when buying 12 copies of X-Men #1 was going to make everyone rich?
