Wedding Bells?

I'm always a little behind, news-wise, but there's a revelation here that make me sad.

I'm not a huge Green Arrow fan, but it'll be a shame to see the book go. Ollie's got some of the most interesting supporting casts around that tend to be under-appreciated and under-utilized.

I'm more sad though about the proported proposal between Ollie and Dinah Lance, though.

I don't hate the couple, honestly. I like Ollie and I like Dinah...I just prefer them apart rather than together. Especially since I'm still stewing in a fan-entitlement sulk about the abrupt breakup between Dinah and Pieter Cross in JSA.

I CAN hold a grudge. :-P

Still, I did complain before that I wanted a wedding. And Ollie settling down would be kind of nice to see. Dinah in a wedding dress would look smashing. So if Dinah DOES accept the proposal, the result could be fun to see. What's the proper etiquette for attending a wedding in costume?

If they actually get married, as opposed to dancing around it and then not going through with it, as they have before, I will be so damn happy.

I've wanted Dinah to lay official claim to her share of Ollie's supporting cast for years. I want to see Sin playing with Lian and Connor joining the JSA. I want her to bring Mia to see the statue of her mother. I want a heroine with adult children to still be considered sexy.

So, yeah, really it's not so much that I'm looking forward to the story as to the change in how writers treat her. Some of that has been in play before but it's been inconsistent across the board and I'd really like to see it as official canon.

As far as the relationship itself goes . . . I've always found it interesting how you could blame Dinah's inablity to establish a healthy romance on the fact that her parents' marraige was so disfunctional (and I've always liked how they switched the gender roles of 'poor little spouse' and 'loving partner who still strays' on that). That said, Ollie's infidelity to Dinah is something Grell started. They've since gotten rid of every other horrible thing Grell did to her, let's just get this last one. This doesn't have to be a trainwreck relationship.

Personally I think that if DC is so allegedly committed to diversity then let it extend to relationships as well. Not every relationship has to end in marriage to be monogamous and long term. Personally I'd love to see Dina and Ollie back together and just openly state that they know their own hearts and minds and that a wedding ring or the lack of wouldn't change a damn thing. I mean Clark and Lois marrying, sure, he's Mr. Traditional Values after all. I can even see Hal or Bruce. But Ollie? It seems really out of character for him, and to be honest I can't picture Dinah wanting to be Mrs. anybody, after she's worked so long to carve out her own identity.

    Peace
    And
    Long
    Life

I'm pretty sure everyone has to go in costume so the artist can draw huge group shots.

An engagement does not a marriage make. Knowing Ollie, he'll manage to stretch this out for quite some time.

On the other hand, I'm a sentimentalist at heart, and wedding issues ALWAYS make me sniffle. And I'd love to have all the participants show up in tuxes and dresses,...and then try to identify everybody WITHOUT their costumes. heh.

I dunno.. comic book weddings kinda make my skin crawl sometimes. This being due to my usual fanboy-antipathy... and maybe that's just *my* bad 'tude, but I rarely see the subject of marriage handled realistically. The saccherine over-emotive writing usually gets me.. just doesn't ring true somehow.

That said, I dunno! I like Dinah better then Ollie these days, s_d has filled me in on his history of dickiness... maybe I'm just jaded. XD

If they pull it off well, it could be ok.

Honestly, I can't see how this possibly could turn out well, solely on the grounds of them being.. well, Ollie and Dinah. Admittedly I don't know Ollie from day one, but I can't really see him being content as a stay at home dad, now that Dinah is finally back in the big League (so to say), where she always belonged, I don't want to see her playing the little wife just so that Ollie will shut up.
But then again, I will also readily admit, that I too want to see her going back to Pieter, because he's just so damn awesome!

Okay.. quite a few thoughts here.

First, I feel the pain of all of you JSA fans who loved the Dinah/Pieter romance. I was one of you. And yes, the way they ended it WAS rather abrupt. But Dinah has always been one to fight from the heart - and having the man who was the love of your life for so many years coming back into it... well, I've seen a lot of women leave a relationship for a chance at rekindling what they thought might be a return to better times.

Shame that Smith left the main Green Arrow book and Winick had no interest in continuing the Ollie/Dinah romance.

Still, for everyone who says that it's not in Ollie's nature to get tied down - well, the way Winick wrote him, no. But back in the ol' O'Neil days and even through the Grell years, it was Ollie who kept pushing for a more traditional life - i.e. wife and kids, in spirit if not in title - and Dinah who worried about keeping her independence.

So I can easily see Ollie popping the question to Dinah. Hell, he was about to at the end of Meltzer's "Archer's Quest" before chickening out.

flidget - I second that. There have been hints in other books that Dinah had been taking up a mentoring role with Mia and the whole family (including Dinah) celebrating Christmas together in 52. I want to read those stories, not see a panel in 52 or a casual mention of Dinah training Mia in Teen Titans.

toriach - I personally think they'd be better off as common-law husband and wife too. But whatever it takes to get my favorite couple back together and Winick off my favorite character's book. ;)

And make no mistake - he IS off the book. Given the foot he put in his mouth at WonderCon regarding his plans for the book BEFORE the cancelation was announcened, I can't believe DC would be stupid enough to keep him around to write the wedding issue.

Indiiicia - a lot of Ollie's dickiness has been overexagerated by fans who never read the stories or by writers who don't do their research (*cough WINICK cough). Granted he's never been a saint, he only ever cheated on her once - and it ammounted to one kiss that, according to Mike Grell, Ollie was forced into.

papervolcano - I'd say that the big factor in Dinah not refusing the proposal is the fact that - based on events in Birds of Prey - she knows that he is a changed man and has become a lot more responsible than he was in the past.

And I too cannot wait to see the bachelor/bachelorette parties for this one. Somehow, I'm imagining Dinah's winding up a lot wilder than Ollie's if only because of which one Clark would be at.

I can see it now: Ollie will wind up watching "The Ten Commandments" as Dinah is breaking four or five of them. ;)

mark - I agree - this won't be an easy marriage for anyone as individualistic as Ollie and Dinah are. But then again, I can see them both trying to make it work just to prove everyone else wrong.

I can't see either of them changing their names, but wouldn't ya just luv to see Black Arrow and Green Canary in the DCU?
