Random Ridiculous Realization:

Apparently there are a few people who read this thing who have actually watched Criminal Minds. So I can share this one and someone out there will actually know what I'm talking about! Yay!

Okay so, I've come to the realization that if you give Tim Drake twenty years and an FBI badge, you'd totally end up with Aaron Hotchner.

They're both scary, intense, and stuck simultaneously trying to lead a team of disparate and capable folk while playing emotional support for brilliant older men with Issues (capital I) who are constantly skirting some sort of mental breakdown.

Admittedly, Tim would be much better in a fight, while Hotch has never worn festive red and green while following around a guy dressed up as a giant bat. That we know of.

Still, now I'm gonna have a hell of a time not giggling through the next episode. My brain is a strange strange place.

That dressing up as Robin sounds like it COULD have been an episode of Dharma & Greg...

I don't watch the show. Does Joe Mantegna have Issues, or was it just Mandy Patinkin?

Mantegna has yet to appear on Criminal Minds. I am looking forward to his arrival. I think he's awesome.
I totally agree with your post about the adult Drake. Robin is pretty intense for such a young man.
BTW, there was an episode where Hotchner totally kicked ass.

Mandy Patankin's issues have issues, he's so notoriously prickly. Rumor has it that Thomas Gibson, who plays Hotchner, disliked Patankin so much from their year together on Chicago Hope, that the producers of the show didn't tell him Patankin was cast as Gideon until the first table read.

Patankin was allegedly SO troublesome- showing up late, etc- that Gideon's exit was filmed the way it was because none of the cast want to deal with him ever again.

I wonder why they're even bothering bringing in Mantegna, since there are already plenty characters as it is, and Hotchner could easily slide into the leader slot.

    lurker: wouldn't surprise me. :-)

anthony: I'm referring to Patinkin's character actually. :-) I'm intrigued to see what they'll do with Mantegna, as they sound like they're setting him up as the anti-Gideon (Patinkin). Might be a completely new dynamic. :-)

anonymous: Yeah, I think I know which episode you're talking about. :-P Still though, he's not exactly bat trained. :-)

dan: I was actually referring to character, not actor there. But yeah, I'd heard the gossip. To give both men credit, I never picked up anything but deep fondness from the characters on screen.

Hotch always was the team leader, but I agree that he could easily slide into lead character slot and has been nicely these past few episodes.

Then again, Mantegna's rumored backstory does sound like it'll add something interesting and new to the team. It's good to have an older, more experienced presence, and the proposed backstory (initially recruited Hotch, now working under him) sounds like it'll be fairly neat. I'm looking forward to the new team dynamics. :-)

Kalinara - thank you. I'm never going to be able to see Hotch onscreen without giggling.

    Dan -

I wonder why they're even bothering bringing in Mantegna

They seem to have set up the idea that there are this many people on a team, and so when a spot opens up, it must be filled. From the first episode of the series, where Elle talked about wanting the opening at the BAU, through Elle's leaving and Prentiss' coming onboard, and now to this, the team has always seemed to have a certain number of slots. I have no idea if that's carried over from the real BAU, but knowing bureaucracies, I wouldn't be surprised.

The writers may never have intended, at the start, to replace Elle, and now Gideon, but they've done a good job of making me, at least, interested in the different makeups of the team.

(Woo. Longwinded. I shut up now.)

Alexandra- looking back at the episodes that kicked off this season, that makes sense. And it's a good idea to bring in a character that was pals with Hotchner since, well, Hotch is in a pretty bad place right now, and he needs some sort of old buddy backing him up.

And in real life, people rotate in and out of teams all the time. That's one of the things that works about MI-5- eventually people leave or die.
