Request!

I have the due dates for a couple of different, fairly important, assignments coming up in the coming weeks. Naturally this means one thing.

Keeping sane by exploiting my utter lack of attention span!

Normally I do this by going back through and reading archives of webcomics that I remember I like once in a blue moon. However I'm running out of my very short list, pretty fast.

So um, if anyone out there are big webcomics readers, can you recommend me some? I think you guys probably have a fairly decent idea of my taste by now. :-) And if not, well, tell me about comics you like. Maybe I'll like them too. (What? I can have facets! ...maybe.)

Any recs would be appreciated!

Hey there! I normally lurk, but you seem in need. :) I actually made a post of my top 10 comics that I check every single day back in July, so I'll just link you to that instead of spouting all of it out here. [Link]

Hope you enjoy some of them, and that your assignments go well!

I'll throw in the webcomics I check in with regularly:
Darth & Droids - a webcomic which is running through the scenes in Star Wars: Episode I with the dialog rewritten as though it were a role-playing game. More fun that I make it sound :)
Irregular Webcomic - a multi-storyline lego epic 4 panels at a time with some very interesting annotations.
Pearls Before Swine - traditional 4 panel (often black) humour with an animal cast.
Get Your War On - angry political comic strip in the style of business clipart
an finally a webcomic that appears to have been "resting" for quite some time, Hello Cthulu.

    Good luck with the assignments.

And I'll be checking out those webcomics of yours kilrothi - they look like fun :)

Every time I start reading something, it ends. I doom webcomics. Doooooom!

Er, that said, lately I've been reading Punch & Pie, the sequel to Queen of Wands, and Bellen. Bellen's great for when you just want something to cute up your day, but not so distracting that you can't get right back to work. You might want to give it a pass if adorable co-dependence isn't your thing, though.

Seconding the Irregular Webcomic rec, as well. Legos!

There's an old British webcomic called "Dubious Tales" which is long dead but the archives are worth a look.

"XKCD" is just fun and bizarre.

"Scary Go Round" has great verbal humour. A sample: "It's like the blind leading the blind... into a razor blade factory." as well as goblins and skellingtons.

Also, not a webcomic, but if you want to laugh your sides off go to www.escapistmagazine.com and watch a video game review series called "Zero Punctuation" by Ben "Yahtzee" Croshaw. I'm not even much of a gamer and I find it hilarious.

I haven't been reading your blog too long so I am not sure if you'd like these webcomics but eh, worth a shot:

    Shortpacked
    http://www.shortpacked.com
Transformer jokes AND Batman jokes, what's not to love.

"The Devil's Panties" by Jennie Breeden (the web address escapes me, FYI: Despite the name it's not a raunchy comic....well...not real raunchy anyway)

PvP (http://www.pvponline.com) (but I am assuming you check this out already from time to time

I'll echo the XKCD recommendation too.

This isn't something that I can actually help you with, but if you should find any webcomics that feature Nick Fury tearing his shirt off, I hopet that you'll let ME know!

The ones I read regularly are xkcd, previously mentioned; The Rack, which I'm sure you know about; Planet Karen, ditto; whatever it is Kate Beaton calls what she does (http://beatonna.livejournal.com/); Penny Arcade and Order of the Stick, which are famous; and Laugh-out-Loud Cats, which must be read in quantity to be fully appreciated (http://apelad.blogspot.com/).

Yeah I'm seconding the vote for Wonderella and suggesting Dr. McNinja as well.

Oh and if you like Darth and Droids, try DM of the Rings.

Seconding Wonderella, XKCD, and Penny Arcade.

Also Order of the Stick, a stick figure webcomic about a D&D party that manages to be both very funny and well plotted. Obviously some familiarity with the subject matter helps, but it's arguably the best gaming strip out there.

Girl Genius I've been happily surprised to find and enjoy. It's gaslamp fantasy.

Templar, Arizona is also pretty good. It's alt-history leaning towards romaneque conquering of America viewed through a slice of life lens.

Looking For Group is just an out and out hoot of a fantasy. The dark wizard is hilarious (he's part of the group) and I enjoy the questing.

I second (third? fourth?) the Girl Genius reccomendation. Also: Narbonic, by Shaenon Gaerity mad science with giant gerbils and computer geeks, (among many other things, Skin Horse, also by Gaerity, (with a transvestite and a super-intelligent dog), Buck Godot, by the people that brought us Girl Genuis, Zap!, (it has psychics, robots, cat people), No Rest for the Wicked, (which updates excruciatingly rarely, however), No Need For Bushido, (though beware the "sexy ninja ladies" jokes), Sheldon, (starring a billionaire ten-year-old, his grandfather, a talking duck, a bad-ass little lizard, and a pug), and Red String.

Not so much webcomics as comics on the web... the Golden Age Public Domain variety.

Ok if you liked Narbonic then you should hopefully already be reading Skin Horse. Or, Garrity's currently on hiatus Smithson.

Pearls before Swine says Two Lumps

The Non-Adventures of Wonderella? Dr. McNinja

Order of the Stick? Yet Another Fantasy Gamer Comic and 8-bit Theatre

Also Zebra Girl just because its so damn pretty...

I know I'm a little late to the party, if you're looking for sheer, bizarre escapism, Minus is one of the best series I know of for it.

Goblins: Life Through Their Eyes is a good deconstruction of the typical RPG comic. The goblins are the heroes and the humans are monsters who are out to get them. It only updates two or three times a month, but the archives are fairly long.

No Pink Ponies was better before it took a turn toward melodrama, but the archives are a real hoot and the art is consistently great. It hasn't been updated since June, though.

El Goonish Shive has some nice character development and the art improves by leaps and bounds over its course, but the story moves at a glacial pace and the author uses the comic to indulge his kinks a little too much IMO. Also has an erratic update schedule.

Erfworld is hosted on the same site as The Order of the Stick and is also a parody of tabletop gaming (wargames in this case), but it has darker undertones and a great deal of moral ambiguity. Very offbeat sense of humor. The art could be accurately described as "grotesque cute". Updates regularly. The only negative comment I have about it is that the narrative can be hard to follow and the wargaming jargon is sometimes a little impenetrable.

Elf Only Inn started off as a parody of chat room roleplaying but now lampoons MMORPGs. It's another comic whose best days are behind it, but many of the classic strips are hilarious. Also, it hasn't updated since May.

If you like Shortpacked!, you may or may not enjoy It's Walky!, which developed the greater part of David Willis's "Walkyverse" and introduced a few SP characters. It's got considerably more angst than SP, which I understand turned a lot of people off. The story ended in 2004.

What’s New with Phil and Dixie is an online reprint of a gaming strip that Phil Foglio (the co-author of Girl Genius) drew for a few gaming magazines in the ‘80s and ‘90s that pokes fun at various tabletop games. Personally, I think it’s Phil’s signature work up until GG.

And it's not a webcomic, but, well... Homestar Runner. Sewiously.

Deep Fried, the comic that leaves a stain. Humor in a jugular vein.

I'm popping back in to totally second GOBLINS. I can't believe I forgot about it. It got me interested in gaming far more than cute nebbish boys and girls with pieces of paper, dice and a freakish hold of mathematics.
