Interesting!

So now we know the new creative team on JSA.

I wouldn't have thought of Willingham writing JSA, but that could actually work really well. Fables is pretty consistently good, and he is definitely experienced with writing a very large cast. I wasn't a big fan of him on Robin, but I suspect that was more stylistic issues. I'm looking forward to some Fables-esque badass moments for everyone. He even made King Cole awesome.

Though I admit, the treatment of the Arabian fables never quite sit well with me. Hopefully that won't be a problem to arise with this cast of characters.

It'll be pretty interesting to see what he does with this group, I think!

Have you read the latest Fables TPB, War and Pieces? I think it improves the handling of the Arabian fables, but would be interested in another opinion.

Well, I love Fables and Jack of Fables, so I'm hoping that this will work out well too.

    At least it's not Winick.

Hmmmm. He could be good and bad, by turns, on Shadowpact, which had a similarly large cast. We'll see, I suppose.

And he choked considerably on Salvation Run. If he can successfully fight his tendency to make everyone talk coldly and formally, he'll go far.

I confess that I still evaluate Willingham's work based on the strengths and weaknesses of The Elementals, which isn't really fair, considering that he's grown considerably over the last... um... decade or two.

(I think I actually have his two pre-Elementals modules for V&V somewhere...)

    Oh, Jesus Christ, no.

Expect JSA to turn into a vehicle for his neoconservative political views, just like Fables, only worse because he sucks at writing characters he didn't create himself.

This is the guy who made Power Girl, Gloria Steinem with a cape, a Republican in that horrendous "Decisions" miniseries, ferchrissakes.

And don't forget he wrote the bit with Spoiler and the power drill, or Leslie Thompkins letting her die to teach Bats a lesson.

I stopped reading Fables after the first trade so I have to ask: what did he do with the Arabian Fables that has you worried? Were they portrayed as modern Middle eastern stereotypes? Because that would seem ominous.

    I wouldn't say they're modern stereotypes.

They've very much an exoticized Other though, and as far as I'd read, they were pretty much portrayed as collectively bad (except for Sinbad, who was the token "good" one.)

Granted, some of this probably improved after I'd stopped reading, but it was offputting to me.

I like Sturges' work on Blue Beetle. He took over for Rogers and has barely missed a beat.

Oh, and Greg: I haven't read the TPB yet, but I'll try to check it out.

If it were just Sturges I wouldn't be so up in arms (though I heard his run on Shadowpact was less than spectacular).

Hopefully he'll be able to rein Willingham in, but either way I'm dropping the book when Johns leaves.

Oh, Great Galaxies. He did "Decisions"?

I need to run to my local comics store and drop JSA NOW.

(For the record, I didn't quite buy the investigative reporter with a vendetta against a corporate mogul as a Republican, either. But that's hardly the worst sin of that particular waste of pulp.)

I believe that was a combination: Winick and Willingham.

Hopefully Sturges will be a better co-writer

"Decisions"? Wasn't that the one where Lois didn't know Clark's political affiliation, despite their being married for years? RELATIONSHIPS DON'T WORK THAT WAY!!!
