A New Meme.

My good friend (and occasional victim) Matt had an idea for a meme and I thought it was nifty, so I swiped it for the blog.

By the way, how do you pronounce "meme"? That's bothered me for ages.

Anyway here it is:

The initial idea was to create a team of four heroes, a.la the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, only the catch is that each hero must be a character portrayed by the same actor.

That seemed nifty to me, but I am hindered by the fact that there are many actors for whom I really can't think of more than two or so applicable characters. However, as a kid, I always enjoyed the Bobbsey Twins books, so that gave us the notion about how to modify the meme.

So now the challenge is to create a team of four to eight members, which comprise of sets of doubles as played by the same actor.

For my set, I decided to do a team of six:

1) An Obnoxious Investigator: Tony DiNozzo - NCIS (played by Michael Weatherly)
2) A Cyber-Journalist Hacker: Logan Cale - Dark Angel (played by Michael Weatherly)

3) A Shiny Sentient Warship: Andromeda - Andromeda (played by Lexa Doig)
4) A Doctor: Dr. Lam - Stargate SG-1 (played by Lexa Doig)

5) A Genetically Enhanced Super-Soldier - Aeryn Sun - Farscape (played by Claudia Black)
6) An Intergalactic Con-Artist - Vala - Stargate SG-1 (played by Claudia Black)

This is a team that works well in my opinion. Obviously, this team would be centered around space exploration. And by "space exploration" I mean "shooting the crap out of bad guys" of course.

I think they should actually get along fairly well. Andromeda probably wouldn't find this crew of hacker, obnoxious flirt with penchant for contracting ancient diseases, con-artist, super-soldier, and doctor/voice of sanity too much different from her old crew. Though thankfully there is no annoyingly cryptic purple/gold alien or Kevin Sorbo.

Keeping Aeryn from killing DiNozzo or Vala (who ought to get along swimmingly) might be a trick at first, but ultimately, she should be able to get used to them. The crew of Moya was also made up of irritating people, and at least here there are no Muppets.

We already know that genetically altered super-soldier ladies are Logan's type, and he might appreciate one who doesn't pout as often. While in turn, she seems to enjoy intelligent men who get injured a lot, so there may be possible chemistry in that team-up.

DiNozzo, being the only one from a non-sci-fi universe would be good for the "fish out of water" perspective. He's fairly adaptable to craziness after all, and well, he'll be hanging out with a geek and four beautiful women. I'm sure he'll manage.

And really, considering the inevitability of certain team members (read: not the girls) of getting drugged, kidnapped, catching diseases from the dark ages, getting contrived viruses designed to keep apart romantic couples for yet another season, and finding various other reasons to keel over, it's probably a good thing to have a doctor in the mix.

Heh, this is fun.

Kevin Sorbo would be pretty easy to fit into this meme. Starship captain AND godling...

Though I can also see doing an all John Rhys-Davies team. Gimli, The Professor, Alexandre Dumas and about a half-dozen terrible scifi movie characters...

No offense, but i think a lot of those refferences are a little too obscure to qualify as a meme. I would go with with 4-6 all from one actor, Christopher Walken.

    Top 4:
    1) The Headless Horseman (Sleepy Hollow)
    2) Murderous, human-hating angel Gabriel (The Prophecy)
    3) Max Shreck, asshole businessman with crazy hair who tries to kill Catwoman (Batman Returns)
    4) Man who can see the (often horrible) secrets and future of other people just by making physical contact with them (The Dead Zone)

I think this makes a pretty well-rounded team, all having something akin to powers (as long as you count ruthless business sense for Shreck) and all being fun.

ALSO, maybe Christopher Walken himself can be like Bosley, giving them assignments like in Charlie's Angels.

    Runners up:
    - Heroic Ant general (Antz)
    - Traumatized Vietnam soldier/veteran (The Deer Hunter)
    - Captain Koons, Soldier who hid watch up his ass (Pulp Fiction)
    - Aging semi-retired gangster or semi-retired former covert ops, a/k/a fancy dressed, somewhat ominous character with criminal background(suicide kings/true romance/excess baggage/etc.)

Brian: Since when is obscurity a barrier to a meme?

Besides, they're only obscure if you don't follow a lot of bad 90s/00s sci-fi. :-)

I'll concede that. I guess I just got sidetracked when I didn't know a number of the previously mentioned characters and so could not gauge the hilarity of the group proposed in the post. Then I started thinking about Walken's headless horseman arguing with the guy with the watch up his ass over who had it tougher and it was all down hill from there

:-) The fun of memes is not in the comprehension, but in the construction, I think.

Your team is pretty funny, by the way. :-)

(If I wanted to go obscure, I'd have listed people from bad Power Ranger rip-offs and soap operas. :-P)

I'd like to see a team that included the three famous Bill Mumy characters: Will Robinson from Lost In Space, Lanier from Babylon 5, and Anthony Freemont from Twilight Zone. Any bets as to how long before somebody's ass gets wished into a cornfield?

I'd like to see a team that included a few famous Bill Murray characters:
    1) Steve Zissou from The Life Aquatic
    2) Peter Venkman from Ghostbusters
    3) Carl the groundskeeper from Caddyshack
    4) The guy form Groundhogs Day, with the omniscient power of knowing everything that is going to happen because he lived this day already.

How long before Venkman has slept with every woman in the story and Zissou and the Caddyshack groundskeeper start arguing about how to blow them all up?

Maybe I'm not being scifi/fantasy/genre enough? What about Bill Paxton?

    1) Pvt. Hudson of the Space Marines from Aliens
    2) The God's hand killer from Frailty
    3) Severen the vampire from Near Dark
    4) Cousin Chet from Weird Science (for comedy relief)

Maybe I don't watch enough TV.

Earth finds itself suddenly beset by all manner of extra-terrestrial threats. President of the United States David Palmer (Dennis Haysbert, "24") and Vice President Kathryn Bennett (Glenn Close, "Air Force One") form a special unit composed of top people from the military, espionage, and law-enforcement communities - with a special eye toward imaginative thinkers.

Under the command of the U.S. Air Force's General Jack O'Neill (Richard Dean Anderson, "Stargate SG-1") is a diverse team:

Sgt. Major Jonas Blane, U.S. Army (Haysbert, "The Unit")
Captain Monica Rawling, ex-LAPD (Close, "The Shield")
Federal Marshal Karen Sisco (Carla Gugino, "Karen Sisco")
    MacGyver, Phoenix Foundation (Anderson, "MacGyver")
Ingrid Cortez, International Super-Spy (Gugino, "Spy Kids")

Featured in a guest appearance: Kilowog of the Green Lantern Corps (Haysbert)

    In talks for Season Two:
Vic Mackey, ex-LAPD (Michael Chiklis, "The Shield")
Benjamin J. Grimm, former test pilot (Chiklis, "Fantastic Four")

Brought to you by Allstate. "You're in good hands."

Hmm, here's my ideas for your and Matt's meme:

    3) a seasoned fighter pilot: Sqn. Ldr. Canfield (Michael Caine in "Battle of Britain")

    Female:
    1) a neurotic, feisty FBI agent: Gracie Hart (Sandra Bullock in "Miss Congeliality" 1 & 2)
    2) a computer whiz lacking in social skills: Angela Bennett (Sandra Bullock in "The Net")
    3) an apprentice witch: Sally Owens (Sandra Bullock in "Practical Magic")
    4) the enthusiastic rookie who acts as the glue in a team consisting of misfit loners: Lenina Huxley (Sandra Bullock in "Demolition Man")

    Your meme:
A comedic time-travelling space opera with a crew consisting of

    1) the serious one who gets things done: Ripley (Sigourney Weaver in the "Alien" films)
    2) the sentient spaceship: Planet Express Ship (Sigourney Weaver in the Valentine episode of "Futurama")

    3) the guy with the gadgets: R (John Cleese in his James Bond films)
    4) the crazed berserk fighter: Sir Launcelot (John Cleese in "Monty Python and the Holy Grail")

    5) the deadly swordsman with an air of tragedy and an ever-ready wit: Hector Savinien Cyrano de Bergerac (Gerard Depardieu in "Cyrano de Bergerac")
    6) the not-too bright strong guy: Obelix (Gerard Depardieu in the "Asterix" films)

Me, I'm going with Anthony Head (Nescafe Adverts) as the brave young hero with a romantic streak and a touch of brashness, Anthony Head (Buffy) as the Smart Guy who supports him, Anthony Head (Little Britain) as their calm, collected but occassionally out-of-touch leader and Anthony Head (Merlin) as the team's estranged, overly-ruthless but brilliant loose canon.

I'd love to see an all Gary Cole hero team of Mike Brady (Brady Bunch: The Movie), Harvey Birdman (Harvey Birdman, Attorney At Law), Jack "The Nighthawk" Killian (Midnight Caller), Dr. Possible (Kim Possible) and Lt. Conrad "Connie" Rose (Wanted)against the combined Gary Cole villainy of Sheriff Lucas Buck (American Gothic) and Bill Lumbergh (Office Space).
