Happy New Year!

I'm not wishing you a happy new decade, since I think it starts next year. But I hope this coming year is as good as or better than the year before!

I'm in the other camp. You wouldn't call 1980 part of the '70s, would you?

But Happy New Year! Looking forward to another year of reading your blog.

You're absolutely right. When you count to ten, you don't stop at nine.

Me, I'm flexible. I don't think a decade has to work as an analogy to a century (after all you say "the 1920s", not "the third decade" of the twentieth century, so it actually makes more sense to define the 1920s in an abstract way as years 1920 to 1929. But looking at the 1920s as a historical era it makes even more sense to define the 1920s as the years between the end of World War 1 (starting either with the armistice of November 11, 1918, or the Versailles Peace Treaty of 1919) and the Wall Street Crash of 1929 that set off the worldwide Depression. Similarly the 1930s as the years between the Wall Street crash and the beginning of World War 2 (which would mean that in the US the 1930s lasted from late 1929 to late 1941).

:-) For the record, I DO call 1980 part of the '70s. I'm very thorough in my pedanticness. :-)

I don't judge all you folks who don't though. Even if you can't count. :-P

Even though you're wrong, have a good New Year...

    Decade:

    1. a period of ten years: the three decades from 1776 to 1806.
    2. a period of ten years beginning with a year whose last digit is zero: the decade of the 1980s.
    3. a group, set, or series of ten.

    :P
