Yet Another Query!

Okay, so I'm curious from people who've given the Cape more than a cursory glance. Is it any good?

I mean, I actually get all of my super-hero needs met by Hawaii Five-0 (because that's really what that show is, and nothing beats Steve McGarrett's comedic use of excessive force :-P) and I haven't really sat down and given it a try yet.

I remember the pilot having bad reviews, but some pilots do that, and that doesn't negate the show actually becoming good later. I'll probably sit down and give it a shot at one point, but I figured I'd check ahead of time.

    Not bad
    Better than Smallville
Keith David steals every scene he's in

Keith David is pretty good. But its pretty bad. And better than "Smallville" is an exceedingly low bar...

When I saw it in the Hulu trailer this summer I was afraid it would be really cheesy, but they play it straight. It is not bad, but at the same time this is a Network version of a superhero and it follows a formula that takes from so many former NBC shows. It is way better than Smallville, but it is not No Ordinary Family, which has built itself into a nice little show that reaches across genres and ages in my opinion.

I'm actually only watching two prime-time series these days: Chuck and The Cape.

I'm enjoying the latter quite a bit, personally. It's a good, solid show, and it takes itself seriously without trying to be Grim, Gritty and Edgy.

It manages to pull off genre flourishes that would be campy in any other hands ("Welcome to ... The Carnival of Crime!"), and play them straight. It somehow makes the existence of flamboyant costumed-and-or-deformed criminals seem like the most natural thing in the world, because the world treats them matter-of-factly.

It's just the arrival of a costumed-and-possibly-empowered vigilante that elicits skepticism in the populace.

The only flaw, for me, is the tendency for Summer Glau's character to get damsel-in-distressed. That would be mildly irksome no matter the actress, but when it's River Cameron Supergirl ... .

I never watched the show and was in the same boat as you (wondering whether to take a gander). Looks moot now as it's been canceled by NBC. They aren't ever going air the final episodes that are in the can. They are making them available online though.

Ah well... No Ordinary Family is probably next (which at least had an interesting pilot).

The thing I like about the show is how it revels in its comic book ridiculousness instead of trying to run away from it like "Heroes" often did. And Keith David is awesome.

The thing I don't like about it is how dumb and unobservant the characters are forced to be. In a recent ep, The Cape had a conversation in broad daylight with his own wife and kid from SIX FEET AWAY, and neither one could tell his real identity despite no attempt whatsoever to disguise his voice. Also Summer's constant damsel-in-distress status.

It's "OK", I watched about four or five eps. I think The Cape is one of those series that is better watched in on sitting ala DVD. Same goes for The Event, and No Ordinary Family
